Panama Canal Facts:

  • Panama was ruled by Colombia. TR supported the Panamanian Revolution

  • France attempted to dig the Panama Canal in the 1880's but failed (deadly disease, very expensive)

  • The US led project began in 1904 and was officially opened in 1914

  • US engineers used a system of locks (one on the Atlantic side, one on the Pacific) as well as damming the Gatun lake so ships go "up and over Panama"

  • Focused on the eradication of the deadly mosquito

  • Many workers were from the Caribbean

  • Rain and gravity are the most important things to keep the canal working.

Teddy Roosevelt Bullet Points
" Dear Mr. and Mrs. Michtom:
I warmly thank you for your letter and the fine stuffed bear you made. I can hardly wait to show my children. However, I don't think my name is likely to be worth much in the toy bear business, but you are welcome to use it. I wish you great luck with your toy bear business.
Sincerely, Teddy Roosevelt"

John Schrank and see pictures of the artifacts.

  • Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose. But fortunately I had my manuscript, so you see I was going to make a long speech, and there is a bullet - there is where the bullet went through - and it probably saved me from it going into my heart. The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech, but I will try my best. — Theodore Roosevelt, Address at Milwaukee, Wis., October 14, 1912
